WORLD CUP MAKE-UP

On the night of the Rugby World Cup final I was lucky enough to be behind the scenes with Hayley Westenra before she stepped out to sing the NZ National Anthem. I have been doing Hayleys makeup since she was thirteen so I have literally watched her grow up, but never before have I done her makeup for the entire world to see. As usual Hayley was completely cool, calm & collected with her mind only on her voice & her performance & when I saw her on the big screen I was stunned by how beautiful she looked. Since then I have had so many comments on her makeup that night so I thought I would share with you how I achieved it.

Hayley quite possibly has the most beautiful skin I have ever worked on… flawless & porcelain with invisible pores. To start with I prepped her skin with my favorite Smashbox oil free primer & dabbed a touch of Bobbi Brown concealer under her eyes – just on the inner corners- as thats the only place she needed it. For her foundation I required a colour that was a pale as Hayleys skin, yet still with a touch of warmth to create a healthy glow. I chose Cliniques new foundation, ‘Repairwear Laser Focus All Smooth Makeup SPF 15′ in shade #3. I am currently in love with this foundation as it is so light, yet gives just enough coverage. Because Hayley was going to be appearing on millions of HD TV’s all over the world I wanted her skin to be flawless & this new product really delivered the results. To cut back the shine I dusted on some of Shiseido’s Translucent Loose Power, (which looks white but is completely colorless) as I find this works really well on a pale complexion, while a tinted powder can instantly appear orange on porcelain skin.

I enhanced Hayleys brows with Elizabeth Ardens ‘Sable Brow Makeup’, making them quite a bit darker than her natural fair shade. For her eyes I decided to make them shimmery & soft rather than dark & smokey so I created a base with MAC’s Vanilla pigment powder, a light creamy tone with a subtle shimmer- perfect even on its own. On her lids I used MAC’s Melon pigment & applied it with a wet brush, as this makes the shine & colour more intense, plus it lasts longer. I darkened the corners of Hayleys eyes with a deep brown powder shadow (Bobbi Browns Mahogany) then lined her upper lid with Shiseido’s black liquid liner, flicking it up on the outer corners. This gave the makeup that extra drama that was needed so she would literally stand out in the crowd! To finish the eyes I lined the inner rim with a black pencil, then added several layers of Lancomes ‘Doll Eyes’ mascara, which is brilliant for lengthening & separating the lashes.

Hayleys cheeks can take loads of colour, so I created contour with MAC’s Harmony blush- always my favorite pinky brown. I then added a baby pink (Bobbi Browns ‘Slopes’)  to the apple of the cheek as well as the along the brow bone. To create that amazing shimmer than really showed up for the camera I dusted MAC Silver Dusk powder across her cheekbones & temples.

For Hayleys lips I used my all round favorite lipstick, Bobbis Sandwashed Pink, followed by ‘Naked Plum’ High Shimmer lipgloss. Hayley loved her makeup as she felt glamorous yet not overdone & her natural beauty really shone through…. Thats always been my makeup philosophy!

  1. Loved her make-up! I remember thinking that it seemed like quite a ‘bronzed’ look (well, on our TV anyway!) so I presumed that you must have used a bronzer of some type, but maybe it was just the foundation colour or blusher as I notice you haven’t even mentioned bronzer in your description! :)
I noticed (when watching on the TV, can’t see it much in the above photo) that Hayley has a very small indentation mark (like a small chickenpox scar or similar) in her left cheek and remember wondering as I watched the anthem that night ‘Is this something that can’t be covered by make-up?!’ lol.. But as I’ve thought about it and after reading this I’ve decided a) who cares!..she’s so beautiful anyway, and, b) there’s probably nothing you could ‘fill’ it with, it would just draw attention to it even more I guess! :)

  2. I absolutely loved Hayleys makeup! I was wondering who did it… well done, a beautiful job.
