My favorite every day eye makeup look is very simple- it’s just a flick of Aqua pencil smudged across my lids followed by black mascara. I am always getting comments on how great this looks & I have inspired so many of my friends into using a coloured pencil to brighten up their eyes. I use either an emerald green (MAC’s Minted) or a teal (NAR’s Kaliste), but lately I have been loving Estee Lauders new ‘Dramatic Teal’. Heres how to do it! (Photos by Neil Gussey- thanks Neil!)

  1. Lightly dust mineral powder across your lids to create a nice smooth canvas to work on.
  2. Give your brows some definition with a brown pencil or brow makeup.
  3. Using a coloured eye pencil start from the inner corner of the eye & draw a line as close to the lashes as possible, flicking it out at the end. Take care to use short, light strokes to create a soft line.
  4. Use a small brush or cotton bud & lightly smudge the line with a touch of corresponding eye shadow. Sometimes I just leave the line as it is (great if you are in a hurry!) but smudging it gives a more ‘Professional’ look.
  5. Add some shimmer powder or shimmery eye shadow in a neutral tone (silver looks great) across the brow bone. This is something extra you can do for a sparkly evening look.
  6. complete the look with black mascara & remember to layer it on while its still wet to avoid clumping.

  1. Hi Nikki.
Recently I saw you on the good morning show talking about make up for women in their 30′s, 40′s and 50′s.
I am 42 and still have quite good skin for my age and purchased the minted mac liner over a year ago and wondered what is a good base eye shadow to wear with this liner? Is 40 something too old for theses colours as i would like to purchase the Estée lauder teal also.

In regards to foundation , I used to use the Jane iredale set mineral foundation but I feel it isn’t dewy enough so wondered what foundation you would recommen as I usually get the Lancôme tint reinergie?

  2. Hi Deborah
I think its great to wear the teal eyeliner in your 40′s (I do!) plus my cousin is 61 & she loves green liner as does my 70 year old mother. I think its a great colour & so flattering… I have a really old MAC eye shadow called ‘Steamy’ that I use with it but Bobbi Brown have a lovely one called Evergreen that goes really well too.

For foundation you cant go past Clinique. The ‘Even Better’ foundation is fantastic as well as the ‘Repairwear Laser Focus’liquid base. I love Repairwear as its dewy but has great coverage too.
Go to the clinique counter in St Lukes (if you are in Auckland) as the girls there are great & will help you find your colour. Good Luck!
