VINTAGE BEAUTY

My favorite era for makeup would have to be the 1950′s… a time when women never looked more beautiful. Looking back at photographs from that decade is always inspiring to me, as portraits of famous acresses of the time such as Marilyn Monroe or Grace Kelly simply never date. In Bride & Groom magazines latest issue there is a gorgeous fashion spread that we shot round the pool at Eratap Resort, Vanuatu & it was there that I created the above look. Its clean & simple, yet so glamourous & feminine… plus so easy to do yourself!

HOW TO CREATE A VINTAGE LOOK

-Foundation in the 50′s was thick & cakey, so to create a makeup with a modern fifties feel, the trick is to keep your base sheer & dewy. On our model Dayna I lightly applied Loreals True Match in W5, then dusted over some of Elizabeth Ardens Pure Finish mineral powder to give lovely satiny finish.

-To create a strong, arched fifties brow line I used Bobbi Browns brow kit. This is a palate of two brown eye shadows that can be applied to the eyebrows with a small angled brush- much easier to use than a pencil & the results are way more natural.

-The eyes are very simple to create, yet so effective. Firstly I applied a base of cream toned powder eye shadow over the whole eye area sweeping it from the lashline right up to the brows. For the eye liner I drew a template with a soft brown pencil from the inner corner of the eye to the outer edge, then flicked it out 50′s style. Once I was happy with the shape I used a tiny brush & drew the line more sharply with Bobbi Browns Long Wear Gel Liner in black. This is so much easier to use than liquid liner, yet it gives the same dramatic effect. I finished the eyes with several layers of black mascara on the top lashes, leaving it clean on the lower lids in keeping with the era.

-The cheeks are flushed with Bobbi Browns Pot Rouge in ‘Blushed Rose’ & the lips are Bobbi Browns Red #10. To give the red lipstick staying power, I applied a light foundation & powder as a base. I then applied the lipstick with a brush, blotted it with a tissue & reapplied it again for a deep, intense finish. Classic fifties with a modern feel…. My favorite look!
