Whats The Best Mascara?

I think that Mascara is THE essential beauty product & finding a great one can literally change your life! But how confusing can it be going through the process of shopping for that great mascara in the endless isles of Mecca or Sephora? Well heres a few recommendations from the Makeup Guru & goodness knows I have sampled a few mascaras in my time…..

Tips- For the record a good mascara should last you at least three to four months. When I get a new mascara I always keep the old one to use on my bottom lashes, as you only need a hint of mascara underneath the eye. Old clean wands are also handy to use as an eye brow brush or to separate lashes if your mascara is too thick. I also use old wands to apply my brow tint.

Nars Climax Mascara Nars claim that this mascara gives you ‘Explosive lashes from root to tip’ & they are not wrong! I have personally been using this mascara for over a year & I really do rate it as one of the best. It has a mid size fluffy brush with a pointed tip which makes it easy to reach corner lashes. It has a smooth formula & is non ‘clumpy’ which is a must when it comes to creating natural looking lashes- & just quietly I LOATHE clumpy, messy mascara! The best part about Climax is it comes off easily without pulling your lashes or irritating your eyes. I buy mine at Mecca in Auckland for $41.

Nars Climax Extreme Ok so Nars have taken Climax to the extreme here! This is the mascara I use when I want to spend more than a few minutes on my eye makeup…. It is a super dark, inky black- in fact its the blackest I have ever used & creates a panoramic false-lash effect. However it is NOT easy to apply & it takes skill & patience to get those lashes perfect, plus its quite hard to take off & you need a good oily eye makeup remover (I use Clinique) Because the brush is large & fluffy it takes on alot of product, so you really need to wipe the wand along the mouth of the mascara tube every time you dip it (or you will end up with a clumpy mess) I call this my ‘Special Occasion Mascara’ & every time I wear it I feel like I have a new set of lashes ;) $41 at Mecca.

Laura Mercier Caviar Volume Mascara I just love Laura Mercier makeup & this mascara is my new personal favorite. It has a unique spiral-shaped brush that makes application easy & it really does the job of coating & separating each lash individually. The conditioning formula prevents the lashes from going hard so you dont get that ‘crispy’ feel (I hate that!) It is very quick to apply, as each flick of the wand delivers loads of rich mascara without the clumping. It also comes off easily which for me is a must… I enjoy doing my eye makeup but I hate taking it off! Ill definitely be buying this again for $42 from Mecca

Benefit Roller Lash My mum Anna is a mascara expert & is constantly trying out new brands to suit her fine lashes. Her latest favorite is by Benefit, who do an impressive range of mascaras to suit all tastes. Roller Lash is perfect for those with shorter lashes that require volume & curl, as it successfully does both. It has a smaller spiky brush that is slightly curved, so it really gets into the lash roots to create depth & thickness. Anna also tells me she wouldnt be without Benefits They’re real tinted primer. Worn alone this mink brown formula creates natural feathery lashes, then when mascara is added, length & volume is dramatically boosted. Theres no denying that layering is key when it comes to great lashes & these two products really deliver results. You can grab these Benefit mascaras online at Farmers for $48

Revlon Volumazing Ok so if its possible to find a good mascara for under $30 this is the one! I have used this Revlon beauty for several years now & can tell you its a super reliable, easy to use, every day mascara that doesnt cost a bomb. The medium sized tapered brush has wavy fibres that load colour onto the smallest of lashes. The creamy formula doesnt smudge or flake & is easy to remove (all my prerequisites) Grab one from Farmers or the Chemist Warehouse for around $27

The photo heading this story is from a shoot by Neil Gussey of gorgeous model Tui Williams from Red11. I used Nars Climax Extreme Mascara (pictured below) & the lashes are all hers!
